Designs by Moonlight Slumber

Moonlight Slumber® was born out of one Mom’s quest for safe and healthy sleep products. Says, Terri Paul, president of Moonlight Slumber:

When I was pregnant with my first child and began looking for mattresses for my crib, I was surprised at how lax crib safety regulations were. From my past encounters, I was very familiar with the regulations for mattresses in healthcare and hospitality: hospitals, nursing homes, pediatric nurseries, hotels and dormitories, etc. That is why I was shocked that none of these high standards of the medical industry applied to infant sleep products! After all, what is more precious and helpless than a baby? So, I had a mattress custom-made by a healthcare manufacturer.

Then as my friends became pregnant, I offered this service to them. Everyone was shocked when I explained the differences between traditional crib mattresses and my own. That is when I knew that I had to offer these safe, healthy mattresses to parents everywhere—and with that the Starlight Support mattress line was born. It may have taken me ten years and four children later to do it, but the quality of our products speak for themselves.

The Serenity Star prenatal to preschool transitional pillow has similar humble beginnings. Once again, Terri Paul:

Let’s face it, most mothers-to-be become uncomfortable at some point in their pregnancy. I know I did. Our bodies are going through many changes and are working at maximum capacity, yet somehow sleep eludes the pregnant mom. I was worried about proper positioning for my unborn baby, was trying to get my ever-changing shape comfortable, and was plagued by problems like swollen legs and lower back pain. Finally, I thought of my crib manufacturer again. Together we created what would become the first prototype for the Serenity Star transitional body pillow—a prenatal to preschool modular pillow in three parts.

Again, my pregnant friends and business associates proved the perfect testing ground as I handed out prototypes. Every last person who tried this product was amazed. Once a mom-to-be sleep tests it for a few nights, she won’t want to give it up. I’ve even taken it to healthcare professionals and have had positive feedback about how it would enable the side-sleeping position recommended for pregnant women.

We saw a need for a safer, healthier line of sleep products and we strive to live up to the task everyday. Once again, Terri Paul:

With all honesty, my goal with Moonlight Slumber is to offer the best, the safest, the healthiest products available—the safety of our children depends on it. This isn’t just a marketing phrase, it is my true belief. This is a personal and professional mission.

Take Terri’s word for it, if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase for any reason; send it back no questions asked.

Q: Do Moonlight Slumber mattresses off-gas?

A: No.

Q: What is the difference between the Starlight Support and the Starlight Support Supreme mattress?

A: Both mattresses are constructed exactly the same (dual firmness, internal fire barrier, premium fabric, etc.) with one exception: the Supreme has a layer of visco elastic memory foam on the toddler side. So, when you flip the Starlight Support, you flip from extra firm to firm. When you flip the Supreme, you flip from extra firm to a layer of visco elastic memory foam over the firm.

Q: What are the differences between the all-foam and innerspring mattresses?

A: The all foam models have a core made entirely of foam. The innerspring models have an innerspring coil core. Each spring is then wrapped on all sides, top, and bottom with foam, creating foam encapsulated innerspring. A top and bottom layer of foam are added to create dual firmness comfort.

Q: When should the mattress be flipped from the infant side (extra firm) to the toddler side (firm)?

A: While all children progress differently, we recommend that you flip your mattress when your child is approximately nine months old. This is the age that they are typically moving freely about the crib, becoming mobile and beginning to pull up into a standing position. However, should you notice your child becoming restless during the night or naptime, it may be a sign that they are ready for the less firm toddler side.

Q: What is the fire barrier in Moonlight Slumber products?

A: Moonlight Slumber uses an all-natural, patent-pending, internal fire barrier. It is made of inherently fireproof materials with no topically applied chemicals, retardants or other additives. Further, it has been used in the healthcare industry for many years—exceeding all current Federal and State regulations.

Q: What is the difference between a fire retardant and fire resistant materials?

A: Fire retardant materials retard fire—they slow its spread. Fire resistant materials do not burn. Moonlight Slumber products are 16 CFR Part 1633 compliant, meaning they are fire resistant. In independent testing, they have been proven to withstand open flame.

Q: Are Nature’s Star mattresses organic?

A: No. The Nature’s Star mattress has substituted foam with all-natural cotton. The cotton is not bleached, dyed, or chemically altered or treated.

Q: What is the difference between organic cotton and natural cotton?

A: For a crop to be certified organic, it is required to be grown without use of toxins, fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. Natural cotton may be grown in a manner consistent with modern commercial farming techniques. However, both natural and organic cotton products are unaltered upon harvesting. Neither is treated with chemicals, bleach or dye in the manufacturing process.

Q: Do you need to use a mattress pad or waterproof cover with Moonlight Slumber mattresses?

A: No. All Moonlight Slumber mattresses, even the Nature’s Star are manufactured with a premium, waterproof fabric. This fabric is smooth to the touch, warms under your baby, resists cracking and crunching and can be cleaned with a damp sponge.

Q: Are Moonlight Slumber mattresses JPMA Certified?

A: No, JPMA does not have a certification program for mattresses or pillows. Moonlight Slumber is however a JPMA member.

Q: What makes Moonlight Slumber mattresses anti microbial?

A: Moonlight Slumber uses a proven application called Ultra Fresh. It has been extensively tested and used in the medical industry for years. For more information, please visit www.ultrafresh.com

Q: Do regular size crib sheets fit Moonlight Slumber mattresses?

A: Yes.

Q: What is the difference between the contour changing table pads and flat changing table pads?

A: The contour changing table pad has three raised sides and a security strap to attach to your dresser. The flat changing table pad is flat: 1” thick, with no strap.

Consumer Product Safety

CPSIA Compliance

On August 14, 2008, President Bush signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) in to law. This law which affects everyone that manufactures, imports, or distributes toys, apparel and other children's products in the United States was created to protect children from unsafe products.

This legislation requires that all products for use by children of ages 12 and younger have additional information on a permanent label, which includes:

·         Date of production

·         Name of manufacturer

·         Lot or batch number

·         Production location

As reported by JPMA, The CPSC General Counsel has issued several opinions regarding the February 10, 2009 effective date related to product in inventory:

LEAD
The CPSC General Counsel said:
"…Products that contain lead above the limit set in the CPSIA cannot be sold from inventory or on store shelves after February 10, 2009."

PHTHALATES
The CPSC General Counsel said:
"...With regard to phthalates, Congress created a consumer product safety standards and the clear statement of unambiguous intent to apply that standard retroactively cannot be found... [the standard] applies only those products manufactured after the effective date of the new standard."

In summary, it is the opinion of the CPSC General Counsel that:

1.    They will not reverse their interpretation that products with total lead in excess of 600 PPM have to be off store shelves on February 10, 2009; and That the ban on phthalates (0.1% level) does not affect existing inventory.

Moonlight Slumber is proud to say that all of its products, including those in inventory, meet or exceed this standard as tested by SGS. The SGS Group is the global leader and innovator in inspection, verification, testing and certification services. Visit SGS and and learn more about their testing labs.

Additional information about the details of this law and its implementation can be found on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission web-site
